What to do when someone dies

Unfortunately when a person dies, there can be a lot of paperwork that needs filling in, which can take time and cause you extra stress at an already difficult time.

Cathedral Funeral Services will be there to guide you through this process and that is why we have done a brief guide for you below.

If you need any further assistance, do not hesitate to contact Patrick Walesby for further information.

If death occurs at home or in a nursing home

If death occurs at home, you need to telephone a doctor, who will issue a medical certificate of death. After this point, you need to speak to a funeral service who can visit you at a suitable time, day or night.

If death occurs in a nursing home, the staff will arrange for a doctor to visit.

If death occurs in hospital

A nurse can see you and arrange for a doctor to issue the medical certificate of death. You will then need to speak to your funeral director to discuss funeral arrangements.

Sudden death

The police are usually involved at this stage and the Coroner may be contacted. The Coroner will arrange any certificates but you will still need to speak to a funeral director to guide you through this process.

Registration

A funeral director cannot carry out this part of the process. You need to go to a Register Office to give them the death certificate, birth certificate and medical card. You will in turn be given the documentation you need.

For all the above examples, it is also useful for you to let us know if the deceased left a will, as the wishes of that will need to be enacted upon a person’s death.
